Puppy problems, solved kindly
Puppies explore the world with their mouths, have tiny bladders and are learning everything for the first time. Most “puppy problems” are normal puppy behaviour that needs guiding, not punishing.
The basics that solve most puppy problems
- Biting and mouthing: offer a toy to chew instead of hands, pause play calmly if teeth touch skin, and make sure your puppy gets plenty of sleep. Over-tired puppies often bite more.
- Toilet training: take your puppy outside often, especially after waking, eating, playing and drinking, and reward the moment they go in the right place. Accidents indoors are information, not naughtiness, so clean them up without fuss.
- Crate and first nights: make any crate or pen a cosy, positive place with chews and bedding, build up time in it gradually, and expect night-time toilet trips at first.
- Socialisation: let your puppy experience everyday sights, sounds and people at a pace they’re comfortable with, with treats to make new things positive.
Detailed, step-by-step guides for each of these are on the way.
If your puppy seems unwell, has diarrhoea or isn’t eating, contact your vet.
