Reliable recall, step by step
“Not coming back when called” is one of the three training problems UK owners report most often (Dogs Trust, National Dog Survey 2025). Good recall is a safety skill, and it’s what lets your dog enjoy more freedom.
The golden rules
- Always make coming back worth it.
- Never call your dog to something they dislike, and never tell them off when they arrive.
- Use a long line (on a harness) until recall is reliable in that kind of place.

Around livestock, the Countryside Code says it’s good practice to keep your dog on a lead, and on Open Access land and at the coast it’s a legal requirement.
